At least two people died and around 20 others were injured, including several young children, after a tractor-trolley overloaded with migrant labourers overturned in the Kurwai police station area of Madhya Pradesh's Vidisha district on Saturday, 23 May. The vehicle was ferrying approximately 22 people — mostly migrant labourers from Umaria district — to agricultural fields for the moong crop harvest when the accident occurred on Bina Road between Layra and Maliyakheda villages.

How the Accident Unfolded

According to police officials, the overloaded tractor-trolley suddenly lost balance and overturned, throwing all passengers forcefully onto the road. Panic gripped the site as injured labourers and children cried out for help. Local villagers and passing motorists rushed to the spot and assisted in rescue operations before emergency services arrived.

Kurwai Station In-charge RK Mishra reached the scene with his team shortly after receiving information and coordinated the rescue and relief efforts. All injured persons were immediately shifted to the Kurwai Community Health Centre for treatment.

The Victims

Doctors at the health centre declared two persons dead on arrival: Rishabh Sahu (also known as Rishi), a 55-year-old local farmer, and Darbri Kaul, a 65-year-old labourer from Umaria. Police completed preliminary inquest proceedings and sent both bodies for post-mortem examination.

Among the injured, Divya Kol, aged 20, and Rajni Kol, aged 35, sustained serious injuries and were referred to the District Hospital after primary treatment. The remaining 18 injured persons, including several young children, continued to receive treatment at the Kurwai Community Health Centre under close medical monitoring.

Cause of the Crash

Preliminary investigations by police suggested that overloading of the tractor-trolley and excessive speed were the primary causes of the mishap. The vehicle has been seized and evidence collected from the accident site. Station In-charge RK Mishra confirmed that all legal formalities had been completed and that a detailed investigation was underway from every possible angle.

Administration Response

Police and health department officials remained on high alert for several hours following the accident. The district administration notified the families of all injured persons. This incident is a grim reminder of the recurring hazard posed by overloaded transport vehicles used to ferry migrant labourers across rural Madhya Pradesh, particularly during seasonal agricultural cycles.
