Is a plan to produce 260 Vande Bharat sleeper trains confirmed?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 4 (NationPress) A definitive strategy has been established to produce 260 Vande Bharat Sleeper trainsets for Indian Railways, with plans for their gradual integration into standard passenger services, depending on demand and operational readiness, as stated by Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in Parliament on Wednesday.
The initiative for manufacturing the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is being carried out in phases, including prototype development, rigorous trials, and subsequent mass production by BEML and the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, along with their technology partners, as highlighted by the minister in a written response to a Lok Sabha query.
The development of innovative rolling stock such as the Vande Bharat Sleeper coaches requires a comprehensive approach that integrates technological advancements, strategic planning, and manufacturing processes to guarantee a safe, reliable, and comfortable travel experience. This includes prototype creation, extensive testing, and trials leading up to series production, the minister elaborated.
To enhance passenger travel experiences and establish new standards in safety and comfort, these train sets will feature modern coaches equipped with advanced safety components and passenger amenities. These advancements include jerk-free semi-permanent couplers and anti-climbers outfitted with KAVACH, improved acceleration capabilities with an operational speed of 160 KMPH, and a crashworthy car body design compliant with EN standards.
Furthermore, the coaches will be equipped with fire barrier doors at each coach's end to meet fire safety regulations, an aerosol-based fire detection and suppression system in electrical cabinets and lavatories for improved fire safety, and a regenerative braking system to enhance energy efficiency.
Additionally, each coach will feature air conditioning systems supplemented with an indigenous UV-C lamp-based disinfection mechanism that deactivates 99 percent of harmful bacteria present in conditioned air, thereby improving hygiene levels within the passenger area. Other features will include centrally controlled automatic plug doors and fully sealed wider gangways.
Ergonomically designed ladders will facilitate easy access to upper berths. Every coach will also have CCTV surveillance and an emergency talk-back system enabling communication between passengers and the train manager or loco pilot, the minister added.
