Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Dec 10 (NationPress) In a significant update, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced to Parliament on Wednesday that the daily average of train operations within the Indian Railways system has surged to 11,740 in November 2025, rising from 11,283 services that were active before the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Indian Railways has also enhanced the daily average of Mail and Express services, now standing at 2,238 in November 2025, compared to 1,768 services before the pandemic.
In response to a Lok Sabha inquiry, the minister elaborated on the rationalization of the timetable for train services and their stops, a project conducted scientifically with support from IIT-Bombay. This initiative aims to bolster passenger safety by establishing maintenance corridor blocks, accelerating train services, and enhancing punctuality.
Since November 2021, Express train services have been running according to a rationalized schedule and consistent numbers.
Currently, there are 164 Vande Bharat train services featuring Chair Cars operational across the Indian Railways, along with the launch of new train services, including Vande Bharat Express and its variations.
To accommodate long and medium-distance overnight travel, the Sleeper variant of the Vande Bharat train has been innovatively designed, with two such rakes manufactured and currently undergoing trials.
Key technological advancements and safety features incorporated in the Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains include the KAVACH safety system, enhanced acceleration with a top speed of 160 KMPH, and crashworthy, jerk-free semi-permanent couplers and anti-climbers. Additionally, fire barrier doors are installed at both ends of each coach, along with an improved fire safety aerosol-based detection and suppression system for electrical cabinets and lavatories, as mentioned by the minister.
Moreover, these trains feature a regenerative braking system for energy efficiency, air conditioning units equipped with indigenously developed UV-C lamp disinfection systems, centrally controlled automatic plug doors, and fully sealed wider gangways.
They are also fitted with an emergency talk-back unit for communication between passengers and the train manager or loco pilot during emergencies. Facilities include a centralized Coach Monitoring System for better monitoring of passenger amenities such as air conditioning and saloon lighting, as highlighted by Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
