Vande Bharat Sleeper launch between Bengaluru and Mumbai expected soon: Vaishnaw
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Sunday, 17 May said the long-awaited Vande Bharat Sleeper service connecting Bengaluru and Mumbai is expected to commence soon. The announcement came as Vaishnaw virtually flagged off a new express train on the same route, signalling a broader push to upgrade rail connectivity between Karnataka and Maharashtra.
What Vaishnaw Said
'Long-pending demands of South and North Karnataka are now being fulfilled. Further, the Vande Bharat Sleeper service between Bengaluru and Mumbai is expected to start soon,' the minister stated during the virtual flagging-off ceremony. He said accelerated infrastructure development and enhanced funding support are driving the fulfilment of several long-pending railway demands across the state.
Station Redevelopment and Network Expansion
Under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, 61 railway stations in Karnataka are being redeveloped at a combined cost of ₹2,160 crore, with nine stations already completed. Among the flagship projects, Bengaluru Cantonment railway station is being redeveloped at an estimated ₹485 crore, while Yeshwantpur station is undergoing a ₹367 crore overhaul. The minister also noted that approximately 1,750 km of new railway lines have been laid in Karnataka since 2014, and electrification of the challenging Hassan–Mangaluru section has been completed with testing now underway.
Bengaluru Suburban Rail: Progress Across Four Corridors
Work on the Bengaluru Suburban Railway Project is advancing across all four corridors. Land acquisition has been completed for the Baiyappanahalli–Chikkabanavara and Heelalige–Rajanukunte corridors, where station construction is currently in progress. The alignment for the KSR Bengaluru–Devanahalli corridor has received joint approval from the Karnataka government and the Railways, with geotechnical surveys already done. The Kengeri–Whitefield corridor was recently approved and survey work is expected to begin shortly.
Once operational, the suburban network will link major urban hubs including Kempegowda International Airport, Electronic City, Marathahalli, and Hebbal, significantly easing urban mobility pressures in the city.
Vande Bharat Expansion in Karnataka
Karnataka currently operates 12 pairs of Vande Bharat trains. Testing on the Bengaluru–Mangaluru Vande Bharat route is in progress and is expected to improve rail connectivity along the coastal belt up to Madgaon. The addition of the sleeper variant on the Bengaluru–Mumbai corridor would mark a significant step up, catering to overnight travellers on one of the country's busiest inter-city routes.
With multiple projects in various stages of completion, Karnataka's rail landscape is set for a substantial upgrade in the months ahead.
