Bihar road crashes: 3 dead, 7 hurt in Lakhisarai and Patna accidents
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Three people were killed and at least seven others injured in two separate road accidents in Bihar in the early hours of Monday, 19 October 2026 — one on NH-80 in Lakhisarai district and another on Atal Path in Patna, highlighting the persistent danger of overspeeding on Bihar's roads.
Lakhisarai Crash: Two Youths Dead on NH-80
The first accident occurred around 4 am near Adupura under the Suryagarha police station area, when a speeding pickup van struck a motorcycle from behind on National Highway 80. Both riders were thrown off the motorcycle on impact and died at the scene.
The deceased were identified as Ashok Kumar, 17, son of Rupesh Singh, a resident of Akbarpur village under the Samho police station area in Begusarai district, and Rajan Kumar, 20, son of Ravindra Singh alias Madhu, a resident of Jagdishpur village in Suryagarha. Notably, Rajan was the nephew of Baleshwar Singh, deputy chairperson of the Suryagarha Municipal Council.
According to preliminary information, the two were on their way from Suryagarha to their eatery near the Shri Govind Baba Fuel Centre in Rampur village when the pickup van approaching from behind struck them. A police team from Suryagarha police station reached the spot promptly, took custody of the bodies, and sent them to Sadar Hospital, Lakhisarai for post-mortem examination. Police are investigating the circumstances of the collision and taking further legal action.
Patna Crash: Scorpio Ploughs Into Group on Atal Path
Barely an hour earlier, at around 3 am, a speeding Scorpio SUV allegedly lost control and ploughed into a group of people over a stretch of approximately 200 metres on Atal Path in Patna, under the jurisdiction of Patliputra police station, before overturning.
Most of those injured were reportedly around 15 years old and were on their way to a fair. Those identified among the injured include Ranveer Kumar, Mohit Kumar, Deepak, Piyush, and Amarjit. The injured were rushed to a nearby private hospital for treatment.
Bihar minister Ram Kripal Yadav confirmed that seven people had been injured and that the accident had resulted in one death. The minister said police were searching for those who allegedly fled the scene and assured that strict action would be taken against anyone found responsible.
There were also allegations, as yet unverified, that the Scorpio belonged to a leader of a political party. The vehicle's ownership and the exact circumstances of the crash require official verification, according to authorities.
Pattern of Road Deaths in Bihar
Both incidents come amid longstanding concerns about road safety on Bihar's national highways and urban arterials. Overspeeding and poor enforcement of traffic rules in the late-night and early-morning hours have been cited repeatedly in prior accident reports. This is not the first time NH-80 in Lakhisarai has witnessed fatal collisions, and Atal Path — one of Patna's busier commuter corridors — has seen several accidents in recent years.
What Happens Next
Investigations are ongoing at both sites. In the Lakhisarai case, post-mortem proceedings have been initiated and the driver of the pickup van is yet to be formally named in official reports. In the Patna case, police are pursuing those who allegedly fled the scene, with the ownership and condition of the Scorpio also under scrutiny. Further developments are expected as both probes progress.
