New Delhi, April 11 (NationPress) The extradition of Tahawwur Rana from the US marks a significant milestone for the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and India’s security forces. However, securing a conviction will be challenging due to the absence of direct and incriminating evidence against the 26/11 conspirator, according to Advocate Abbas Kazmi, the lawyer for Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Kasab.
In a special discussion with IANS, Kazmi expressed his insights regarding the prosecution and trial of Tahawwur Rana, emphasizing the difficulties in obtaining a conviction, unlike in the case of Ajmal Kasab.
“In the case of Ajmal Kasab, there were approximately 30-32 eyewitnesses who provided testimony in court regarding the massacre perpetrated by ten Pakistani terrorists on Indian soil. In contrast, for Tahawwur Rana, there exists only indirect evidence. He was not present in Mumbai during the terrorist attack, and no one can confirm his presence there,” he stated.
“Consequently, the prosecution will face significant challenges in establishing his involvement in the court and securing a guilty verdict,” he added.
Nonetheless, Kazmi acknowledged that the security agencies successfully obtained his extradition from the US based on substantial evidence, which will aid in demonstrating his culpability in the horrific 2008 Mumbai terror attacks that claimed over 150 lives.
It is important to note that Tahawwur Rana is one of the principal conspirators of the Mumbai attacks and had been incarcerated in the US for an extended period.
Expanding on Rana's background, Kazmi shared: “Rana is of Pakistani origin and a former soldier. He moved to Canada and became a Canadian citizen.”
“His associate, David Coleman Headley, was responsible for scouting various locations in Mumbai that were targeted during the 2008 terror attacks,” he further elaborated.
Kazmi commended the Modi-led government for effectively negotiating with the United States to secure Rana’s extradition.
