Four people died on Wednesday morning after a car reportedly went out of control and plummeted nearly 500 metres into a deep gorge in Mussoorie, Uttarakhand, triggering a large-scale rescue operation by multiple emergency agencies. The accident occurred on the Jharipani-Kolukhet shortcut road at approximately 9 am, officials confirmed.

How the Accident Unfolded

According to eyewitness accounts, the vehicle had briefly halted at a roadside shop before the tragedy. The occupants — who were reportedly travelling from Uttarkashi — purchased some items and returned to the car. Moments later, the vehicle began rolling down the steep slope at high speed. The driver was unable to regain control; the car veered off the road, crossed a patch of vacant land, and plunged into the gorge.

The Mussoorie police station received an alert through the police control room (112) at 9.16 am, following which personnel from the Mussoorie police, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the fire department, and the 108 ambulance service rushed to the site. Teams from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) were also deployed as part of the rescue effort.

Victims Identified

Police identified all four occupants during the rescue operation. They were: Satyaprakash, a resident of Sonipat, Haryana; Manit, aged 19; Savita, 48, wife of Dharmveer, a resident of Nehru Nagar, Ghaziabad; and Sangeeta, 46, wife of Titu, a resident of Karol Bagh, Delhi. The group appears to have been travelling together from Uttarkashi.

Rescue Challenges and Recovery

Rescue teams faced significant difficulties navigating the gorge due to its extreme depth, dense vegetation, and thick undergrowth. Officials said the challenging terrain considerably slowed operations. After several hours of intensive work, teams recovered the body of one woman first, followed by the remaining three victims. All four occupants were confirmed dead.

Senior officials, including the Mussoorie Circle Officer and the Superintendent of Police (City), Dehradun, reached the site to supervise the recovery and assess the circumstances.

Cause Under Investigation

Preliminary findings suggest brake failure may have caused the vehicle to lose control on the steep descent, according to officials. However, authorities stressed that the exact cause would be determined only after a thorough investigation, with all possible angles being examined. Families of the deceased have been notified and have begun travelling to Mussoorie. Legal formalities are underway as the bodies are being processed.

This is among the deadliest single-vehicle accidents reported on the hilly roads around Mussoorie this year, underscoring the recurring danger posed by steep gradients and inadequate vehicle maintenance on mountain routes.
