Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday, 16 July declared that the India-Finland relationship is entering a decisive new phase, citing the elevation of bilateral ties to a Strategic Partnership in Digitalisation and Sustainability earlier this year. Speaking at the India-Finland Business Roundtable in New Delhi, Goyal emphasised the vast commercial opportunities that stronger trade and investment links — accelerated by the recently concluded India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) — stand to unlock for businesses on both sides.

Addressing the gathering alongside Finland's Minister of Economic Affairs, Sakari Puisto, Goyal highlighted how India's talent pool, expanding economy, and manufacturing capabilities dovetail with Finland's technological expertise and innovation ecosystem. He described this complementarity as a 'strong foundation for deeper collaboration.' The minister urged companies from both nations to build substantive partnerships across advanced manufacturing, clean energy, digital technologies, innovation, and other high-priority sectors.

'A sea of opportunities lie ahead for India and Finland,' Goyal told the roundtable gathering.

Bilateral Meetings: Finance and Economic Affairs

Before the roundtable, Goyal met Finland's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Riikka Purra, for discussions covering the strengthening of economic and financial cooperation, enhancement of trade and investment ties, and expansion of collaboration in digitalisation and emerging sectors. The two leaders also examined how the India-EU FTA could deepen engagement between the two countries.

Technology and Innovation at the Centre

In his separate discussions with Minister Puisto, Goyal said the two sides explored cooperation in investments, innovation, R&D, startups, and business partnerships. According to a post Goyal shared on X, the conversation ranged across frontier technologies including artificial intelligence (AI), 6G, quantum technologies, semiconductors, space, and sustainability. Both sides also discussed how the India-EU FTA framework could further amplify trade and investment flows.

The visit's overarching focus on innovation, advanced manufacturing, clean energy, and industrial research reflects a broader Indian diplomatic push to align with Nordic technology leaders as it scales its own deep-tech ambitions.
