Has the Punjab AAP once again shown a blatant disregard for Sikh religious sentiments?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chandigarh, Jan 10 (NationPress) The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab has once again exhibited a troubling and unacceptable disregard for Sikh religious sentiments, fundamental Sikh values, and the sanctity of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, claimed state BJP spokesperson Pritpal Singh Baliawal on Saturday.
Presenting compelling evidence, Baliawal informed the media that as part of the Punjab government’s initiative “War Against Drugs -- II”, a program named ‘Village Guards’ was launched. During this program, pamphlets were circulated, and audio-visual content was showcased, depicting Sri Guru Granth Sahib in a book-like format and in a cartoonish style.
This portrayal, he stressed, constitutes a direct and serious act of sacrilege. He further noted that the content depicted the character of a Granthi Singh in a distorted and derogatory manner, which is entirely against Sikh ‘maryada’, religious decorum, and longstanding Sikh traditions.
Baliawal stated that this incident has profoundly offended the religious sentiments of the Sikh community not just in Punjab, but beyond. He firmly dismissed any claims that this was an accidental mistake, asserting that such an act reveals gross negligence, insensitivity, and a dismissive attitude towards the Sikh faith.
“For Sikhs, Sri Guru Granth Sahib is not just a religious scripture, but the living, eternal Guru, and any misrepresentation of its sacred form is wholly unacceptable,” he emphasized. Baliawal expressed concern that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal, and the party’s senior leadership were present during the event, yet they made no effort to intervene or halt this inappropriate representation.
This silence and inaction are extremely unfortunate and warrant strong condemnation. The Bharatiya Janata Party condemned this disgraceful act committed under the governance of the Aam Aadmi Party.
Baliawal demanded that the AAP leadership promptly issue an unconditional public apology to the Sikh Sangat. He also called for the immediate withdrawal of all objectionable pamphlets, videos, and campaign materials, and insisted on accountability for those responsible for this serious oversight.
