Why is Delhi Speaker Criticizing Punjab Government Over Atishi Remarks?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 30 (NationPress) Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta raised serious concerns regarding the actions of the Punjab government concerning the sanctity of the Sikh Gurus. He condemned the ongoing delay in providing the FIR and forensic report tied to an allegedly manipulated video of AAP leader Atishi's contentious comments.
Describing the situation as a potential conspiracy, Gupta highlighted that Atishi’s purportedly disrespectful comments were made during a Delhi Assembly session on January 6. Yet, a complaint and FIR concerning the allegedly altered video were filed in Punjab, without the approval of the assembly in the national capital.
Despite reminders from the Delhi Assembly, the Punjab government's continuous withholding of the relevant files raises significant concerns.
“To date, no copy of the FIR has been shared, nor has the complaint been made available, and no official investigation report has been released. This scenario breeds suspicion and undermines transparency,” he stated.
The Speaker emphasized that the ongoing silence and delays suggest a calculated effort to hide the truth.
“This case seems to link directly to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, intensifying the seriousness of the matter. In a democratic setup, accountability is crucial, and no government should avoid it,” he asserted.
Gupta firmly stated that the Delhi Legislative Assembly would approach this issue with the utmost seriousness.
“This is not merely a political or administrative concern; it directly pertains to the honor, dignity, and faith associated with the Gurus. Any negligence or insensitivity towards this matter is utterly unacceptable,” he remarked.
Following the insult to the Gurus, the way misleading narratives were propagated and unnecessary turmoil was created by the ruling party in Punjab, the AAP, will be met with zero tolerance by the Delhi Legislative Assembly.
“It is our duty to unveil the truth and hold those responsible accountable. The Delhi Legislative Assembly is determined to pursue this issue actively and will take all necessary actions to ensure justice,” the Speaker stated, reminding that the Punjab government’s attempt to use Assembly footage for forensic analysis without permission was illegal.
Gupta noted that the footage from the Delhi Assembly belongs to the House, and obtaining it from unauthorized sources to investigate the Atishi remarks controversy represents a significant oversight.
A source from the Delhi Assembly Secretariat indicated that the Punjab government appeared to be protecting Atishi by claiming that a forensic test conducted on footage sourced from an unauthorized channel concluded it was manipulated and that she did not make any controversial statements.
Previously, the Delhi Assembly Speaker had argued that it was inappropriate for the Punjab government to carry out forensic testing on any footage related to the House, as he had already mandated a forensic review of the Assembly video recordings in the national capital.
