Is There a Rift in AAP Over Atishi's Controversial Remarks?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 11 (NationPress) - The Delhi BJP has asserted that a division has surfaced within the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), with a significant number of its legislators stepping away from efforts to support Leader of the Opposition Atishi regarding her purportedly disrespectful comments about Sikh Gurus.
According to Delhi BJP Spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor, it appears that the majority of AAP MLAs have effectively deserted Atishi, as only one out of the 22 MLAs showed up for a protest held in her favor on Sunday.
Kapoor pointed out that it is quite unlikely for such a large number of AAP MLAs to be absent from a demonstration concerning the Leader of Opposition in the Assembly without the approval of National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal.
The BJP representative suggested that the discord within AAP might be instigated by Kejriwal himself.
Kapoor mentioned that given the sensitivity of the matter to Sikhs and Punjab, Kejriwal attempted to downplay the issue by fabricating a narrative and labeling a video of Atishi’s contentious remarks regarding Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji as “fake”.
Nevertheless, it now seems that the political divide between Kejriwal and Atishi has considerably widened, he added.
The spokesperson for Delhi BJP noted that while AAP had planned a protest near the BJP office to support Atishi, the turnout was minimal, with only around 100 supporters gathered for the demonstration.
In a related statement, Delhi BJP Chief Virendra Sachdeva asserted that the video featuring Atishi’s inappropriate remarks in the Assembly, shared by Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra on social media, is genuine.
The Speaker of the Delhi Assembly has initiated an investigation into the video, and the truth will be unveiled once the report is compiled.
