Did BJP MLAs Protest in Delhi Assembly Over Atishi's Controversial Remarks About Sikh Guru?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 7 (NationPress) BJP MLAs organized a protest in the Delhi Assembly on Wednesday, voicing their discontent against AAP leader and Opposition Leader Atishi due to her alleged use of 'insensitive words' concerning a Sikh Guru in a recent Assembly session.
In a statement to the press, Delhi Minister Parvesh Verma mentioned that during the Legislative Assembly session on Tuesday, members were paying homage to the Sikh Gurus. He explained that a special discussion was held in the House to commemorate the 354th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, observed nationwide.
“While we were honoring and showing respect, Atishi failed to engage meaningfully and made comments that offended our sentiments. It deeply pains us that an AAP leader and former Delhi Chief Minister has disrespected a Sikh Guru. Today, she is absent from the Assembly, has not offered an apology, nor attended the session,” Verma stated.
Similarly, Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra condemned Atishi’s actions, labeling them as highly disgraceful.
“The conduct exhibited by Opposition Leader Atishi Marlena yesterday was utterly shameful, and she continues to remain unapologetic. I believe she should publicly apologize to the people of Delhi, to the Sikh community, and to this Assembly. Her behavior demands an apology,” Mishra emphasized.
BJP MLA Arvinder Singh Lovely asserted that the matter revealed an insensitive and irresponsible attitude towards Guru Sahib and the sentiments of the Assembly.
“Yesterday, while the entire Assembly paid tribute on the occasion of the Guru’s martyrdom, they were so engrossed in politics that they did not hesitate to use words that conveyed disrespect towards the Gurus. We strongly condemn this,” he declared.
Another BJP MLA, Tarvinder Singh Marwah, expressed that the discussion regarding Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji should have concluded peacefully on Tuesday.
“The issue should have concluded then. Atishi remarked that the House was discussing trivial matters instead of addressing pollution. However, the Speaker had already clarified that a discussion on pollution was scheduled for today,” he explained.
In response to the allegations, AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan refuted the BJP’s claims, accusing them of distorting facts.
“They are misrepresenting the issue. Nothing of the sort occurred. They claim everything is on record. If true, let it be played back. All Assembly proceedings are recorded. Let the truth be revealed,” Khan asserted.
This controversy traces back to a discussion during a Delhi government program held last November to commemorate the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Sikh Guru. During the debate, AAP MLAs raised concerns regarding air pollution, leading to disruptions in the House.
Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa argued that even unintentional disrespect during such a sacred discussion constitutes a serious offense. He noted that the government had already organized a full-day discussion on pollution for the following day, indicating that the issue should not have been introduced during the tribute session.
