Kolkata, Feb 12 (NationPress) Shortly after rejoining the Congress party in Kolkata on Wednesday afternoon, Abhijit Mukherjee, son of the late former President Pranab Mukherjee, acknowledged that his decision to join the Trinamool Congress was a "misstep".
Mukherjee, who has served as a two-time Congress Lok Sabha member and a former party legislator from West Bengal, previously ran as a Congress candidate in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections for the Jangipur constituency in Murshidabad district, which he had represented twice before.
However, he faced a significant defeat in the 2019 elections, which led to his prolonged absence from active politics.
In July 2021, soon after the last West Bengal Assembly elections, he made the decision to join the Trinamool Congress, where he was officially welcomed by former West Bengal Education Minister and Trinamool Congress Secretary General Partha Chatterjee, who is embroiled in the multi-crore cash for school job scandal in West Bengal.
Despite his affiliation with the Trinamool Congress, Mukherjee did not engage actively in political endeavors for an extended period and was subsequently denied a nomination by the party for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Recently, he expressed his intention to return to the Congress party to Mallikarjun Kharge, the party's national president.
Upon officially rejoining Congress at the party's state headquarters in Kolkata, Mukherjee stated that his return to the nation's oldest political party was a spontaneous choice.
"Leaving Congress and joining Trinamool Congress was a mistake on my part. I also apologize for that error. I am grateful that the Congress leadership has granted me a second opportunity. This would not have been feasible without the approval of Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi," Mukherjee stated.
He further emphasized that Congress is the sole alternative to combat the "divisive" politics in the nation. "From now on, I am committed to fulfilling any responsibilities assigned by the party. Without Congress, uniting the country is unattainable. No other political party possesses that capability," Mukherjee concluded.
