Kolkata, March 6 (NationPress) Abhishek Banerjee, the General Secretary of the Trinamool Congress and Member of Parliament, did not attend the vital inaugural meeting of the party's core committee aimed at evaluating the voters' list in West Bengal and detecting fraudulent voters.
On February 27, during an extended organizational meeting of the Trinamool, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced the establishment of the core committee, placing Abhishek Banerjee's name second after the party’s state President Subrata Bakshi.
The core committee's formation was prompted by concerns expressed by the Chief Minister regarding activities of two online agencies hired by the BJP, which are believed to be attempting to manipulate the voters’ list in the state, potentially allowing voters from outside to participate in the 2026 Assembly elections.
While Trinamool leaders refrained from commenting on Abhishek Banerjee’s absence during the first core committee meeting, a few, speaking on the condition of anonymity, indicated that he is expected to attend a proposed virtual meeting with party leadership on March 15.
His absence has sparked speculation within political circles about an ongoing internal conflict within the Trinamool regarding the balance of “new leadership” versus the “old guard” in leadership roles.
The core committee designed to review the voters’ list comprises two layers. The second layer includes district-level committees tasked with identifying alleged irregularities in their respective areas.
A centralized core committee is led by Bakshi, with Abhishek Banerjee listed second.
Political analysts had anticipated Abhishek Banerjee's presence at the first meeting after he addressed the party’s extended organization meeting on February 27 and dismissed rumors of increasing discord within the Trinamool. His absence now is likely to reignite speculation on the matter, according to observers.
