AC EMU local train extended to Bangaon on India-Bangladesh border from August 20
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The Sealdah Division of Eastern Railway (ER) will extend its air-conditioned EMU local train service to Bangaon — a border town in North 24 Parganas, West Bengal — starting 20 August, offering commuters along the 79-km Sealdah–Bangaon corridor a significantly more comfortable daily commute. The service currently terminates at Barasat and will now run all the way to Bangaon Junction, located on the India–Bangladesh border.
Schedule and Route
The Up AC EMU local will depart Sealdah at 10:33 am, halt at Barasat at 11:14 am, and arrive at Bangaon Junction at 12:23 pm, stopping at all major intermediate stations — Bamangachhi, Duttapukur, Bira, Ashoknagar Road, Habra, Maslandapur, Gobardanga, Thakurnagar, and Chandpara. The return Down Bangaon–Sealdah AC EMU will leave Bangaon at 12:35 pm and terminate at Sealdah at 2:25 pm. The service will operate six days a week, Monday to Saturday.
What the Government Said
Rajeev Saxena, Divisional Railway Manager at Sealdah, said passenger comfort and convenience remain the railway's highest priority. 'Extension of the AC local services to Bangaon directly addresses the growing demand from daily suburban commuters, ensuring that their everyday travel across North 24 Parganas is faster, more modern, and more pleasant,' Saxena said. Another official noted the move is 'aimed at making daily suburban travel cooler and far more comfortable.'
Features of the AC EMU Coaches
The 12-coach rake has a total seating capacity of approximately 1,100 passengers. Coaches are built from stainless steel with straight side walls, connected end-to-end by sealed wider vestibule gangways. Each coach features four electrically operated double-leaf automatic sliding doors per side, large double-sealed glass windows with panoramic views, and three-seater stainless steel seats. Safety and comfort features include CCTV surveillance, GPS-based LED passenger information displays, wear-resistant rubber floor tops, aluminium extruded modular luggage racks, and onboard announcement systems. Doors are automatically controlled by the motorman and remain shut while the train is in motion.
Context and Significance
The Sealdah Division launched its first AC EMU locals in August 2025 and currently operates two AC EMU rakes. Bangaon's strategic position as a border town with an Integrated Check Post (ICP) makes it a significant trading hub, and the extension is expected to benefit both daily commuters and traders. This comes amid Eastern Railway's broader push to expand air-conditioned suburban rail coverage, with the division reportedly planning to procure additional AC EMU rakes for other routes.
