Should We Prioritize Action Over Singing? Akhilesh Yadav Weighs in on Vande Mataram Debate
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Dec 8 (NationPress) In response to the ongoing Vande Mataram dialogue in Parliament on Monday, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav emphasized that the government should prioritize action and social justice over mere symbolism. His comments arose during a momentous joint session of both Houses to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram, where the ruling party underlined the song's significance in India's struggle for freedom.
Addressing the media, Akhilesh Yadav stated, “It is more vital to take action than to simply sing. The Constitution includes numerous directives, and Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar paved the way. What is the government’s stance on social justice? What about your welfare? With tickets costing nearly fifty thousand rupees, what direction is our nation headed in?”
“Thus, it is crucial to act rather than merely sing and to grasp the essence of independence: that our country should be truly free and that post-independence, laws need to operate correctly, and citizens must receive justice along with social justice. How far have we progressed towards achieving social justice?” he queried.
Yadav challenged the government’s commitment to welfare initiatives, pointing out the rising expenses and perceived failure to fulfill constitutional responsibilities.
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reminisced about the 1975 Emergency while honoring the 150th year of Vande Mataram in Parliament, describing the national anthem as a representation of bravery and opposition against authoritarianism.
As PM Modi entered the Lok Sabha, members of the treasury greeted him with chants of “Vande Mataram,” establishing the atmosphere for the significant discourse.
The Prime Minister remarked, “We are all fortunate to witness this moment in this House... On this remarkable occasion, we are experiencing a moment that illuminates the essence of our history.” He encouraged lawmakers to view this discussion as a chance to educate future generations regarding India’s democratic journey.
PM Modi recalled that during the centenary of the song, the nation was grappling with the Emergency — inciting chants of “shame” from the treasury benches. He recounted how the Constitution was “choked” and patriots were imprisoned during that time.
