Ahmedabad, Aug 12 (NationPress) Ahmedabad has been recognized as India’s safest city in the 2025 Crime and Safety Index published by Numbeo. Police Commissioner G.S. Malik described this achievement as “a proud moment for Ahmedabad and a model for cities across India.”
The city has surpassed major metropolitan areas such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, achieving an impressive safety score of 68.3. This reflects the effectiveness of its citizen-centric policing and robust surveillance infrastructure.
With more than 25,000 CCTV cameras installed, including 22,000 voluntarily set up by residents under the Gujarat Public Safety Act, the remaining cameras were placed by the Home Department, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, and the Nirbhaya initiative.
This comprehensive network, together with proactive law enforcement, has been vital in securing public safety.
Malik attributed this success to the collaboration between the police and the community, alongside the support from the Chief Minister, Minister of State for Home, and the Director General of Police. Gujarat is distinguished by its notably low crime rate compared to the national average.
According to the 2021 NCRB "Crime in India" report, Gujarat's overall crime rate has fallen to 11.9 per 100,000 population, significantly lower than the national average of 30.2.
The state recorded a murder rate of just 1.4, compared to the national average of 2.1, and a kidnapping rate of 2.3, while the national rate stands at 7.4.
Crimes against women have also been considerably lower in Gujarat, with a rate of 22.1 compared to 64.5 per 100,000 in other regions.
Moreover, the rate of serious offences against the human body, including grievous injury, rape, and attempted murder, is 28.6 in Gujarat, well below the all-India figure of 80.5, placing it at 31st among 36 states and UTs.
Theft rates remain relatively low at 15.2 per 100,000, while the national average is 42.9.
Ahmedabad’s City Police is structured with 52 police stations covering an area of 466 sq km. The police force comprises approximately 7,500 to 8,000 personnel, averaging about 170-200 officers per station.
When considering the sanctioned and actual personnel, the total strength stands at about 15,500, with 12,500 currently deployed, and nearly 5,000 officers frequently assigned to election duties.
