Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Ahmedabad, March 15 (NationPress) On Sunday, police personnel from Ahmedabad, Gujarat, and surrounding areas participated in a comprehensive one-day training workshop designed to bolster investigations under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Legal professionals emphasized the necessity of strict adherence to procedural guidelines to facilitate successful prosecutions in drug-related offenses.
This training initiative was a collaborative effort between the Ahmedabad Rural Police and the Sambhav Initiative.
The primary goal of the workshop was to enhance the investigative skills of law enforcement officers managing NDPS cases, and to deepen their understanding of judicial scrutiny regarding narcotics investigations.
Sessions were led by former Supreme Court judge M. R. Shah and former Gujarat High Court judge Ashokkumar Joshi, who also serves as the chairman of the Gujarat Public Works Contract Disputes Arbitration Tribunal. They provided insights into the judicial interpretation of the NDPS Act and underscored the significance of following established procedures during investigations.
During the seminar, Shah remarked on the necessity of addressing technical issues that can lead to acquittals in NDPS cases, stating, “Today, with the collaboration of the Ahmedabad Rural Police and Sambhav Initiative, we have conducted a seminar on NDPS to tackle these challenges.”
Experts noted that the NDPS Act is one of the most stringent laws within the criminal justice framework, highlighting the essential need for detailed investigations, accurate documentation, and adherence to protocols such as searches, seizures, sampling, and maintaining the chain of custody to ensure judicial integrity and successful convictions.
The workshop also featured contributions from Praveen Sinha, former Special Director of the CBI and former Deputy National Security Adviser; Sunil Joshi, DIG of the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS); and Sidhartha Korukonda, SP in the Anti-Terrorism Squad, who shared valuable operational experiences and strategies for combating drug trafficking and organized crime.
Attendance included Ahmedabad Additional Commissioner of Police Taun Duggal, along with assistant commissioners, police inspectors, sub-inspectors, and support staff from the city police.
A contingent from the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) also took part in the event.
Ahmedabad Rural SP Om Prakash Jat stated that this program was organized to enhance investigative practices in narcotics-related cases, emphasizing, “Drug trafficking is a significant threat to society and demands legally sound investigations to ensure effective prosecution.”
The workshop concluded with an interactive session where police officers exchanged challenges faced during NDPS investigations and suggested ways to enhance both investigation and prosecution efforts in narcotics cases.
