Ahmedabad, Feb 21 (NationPress) A new initiative has been announced to roll out over 3,000 electric buses along with enhanced metro connectivity and a Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) aimed at revolutionizing Ahmedabad’s urban transport framework. This announcement was made during the launch of the ‘Ahmedabad Next’ and ‘Mobility Exhibition’ on Saturday.
The exhibition was officiated by Minister of State for Urban Development Darshana Vaghela at an event co-hosted by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and Shift Transport.
The initiative lays out a cohesive mobility strategy in anticipation of a potential bid for the 2036 Olympic Games.
During her address, Vaghela highlighted the evolution of public transport in Ahmedabad, tracing its journey “from the ‘Lal Bus’ AMTS to BRTS and the Metro,” noting that long-term planning spanning the next 25 to 50 years is vital for the city's advancement.
She remarked, “Projects like the Second Ring Road, a logistics hub, and the enhancement of the Sabarmati riverfront will facilitate Ahmedabad’s evolution into a world-class, livable city.”
Stressing the importance of traffic management, she stated, “Connector vehicles should be implemented to alleviate congestion on ring roads, and we must augment parking facilities at metro stations to enhance commuter accessibility.”
Mayor Pratibha Jain assured the public body’s dedication to fulfilling Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2070. “To realize the ‘Net Zero’ goal by 2070, the AMC is determined and formulating actionable plans,” she affirmed.
She revealed plans for over 3,000 electric buses to bolster public transport. “To promote electric vehicles, a complete exemption on vehicle tax has been introduced,” she mentioned, adding that initiatives like MyByk are also fostering sustainable mobility.
M Thennarasan, Additional Chief Secretary of the Urban Development Department, indicated that the bid process for the 2036 Olympics is already underway.
“The bidding process for the 2036 Olympics has commenced. Four new metro lines linking the airport and GIFT City are proposed to enhance air quality in line with global standards, with the Gujarat government allocating funds for transport infrastructure viability,” he stated.
Banchhanidhi Pani, the Municipal Commissioner, emphasized the administration's focus on “last-mile connectivity” and intelligent traffic management.
He mentioned that satellite towns like Kalol and Sanand would be linked via the RRTS, cutting travel duration to “just 30 to 45 minutes.”
The event saw participation from MLA Amit Shah, Standing Committee Chairman Devang Dani, AMTS Chairman Dharamshi Desai, and numerous students.
