Gandhinagar, Dec 20 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Gujarat, Bhupendra Patel, has unveiled Ahmedabad's inaugural metro train, which is entirely manufactured under the 'Make in India' initiative, symbolizing India's journey towards self-reliance.
During his visit to the state-of-the-art facility of Titagarh Rail Systems located near Kolkata, he officially inaugurated the coaches designated for the Ahmedabad Metro Rail.
Patel characterized this milestone as a substantial enhancement to the 'Make in India' program and the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, as envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating it as a moment of great pride for the state of Gujarat.
These metro trains are being constructed entirely within India at Titagarh Rail Systems Limited, utilizing state-of-the-art technology.
He pointed out that the plant employs individuals from various states, which aligns with the Prime Minister's vision of 'Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat'.
Patel commended the team for their efforts. The new metro trains are expected to cater to the growing demand and popularity of the Ahmedabad metro, thereby enhancing public transportation convenience.
Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited (GMRCL) has commissioned ten such trains from Titagarh. These additional trains will be essential once the 21-kilometre Phase-2 expansion is completed and new sections become operational shortly.
Patel emphasized that presently, the Ahmedabad Metro serves over 1.6 lakh passengers daily, with ridership increasing by 30-40 percent annually. Metro services are set to expand further, with a new metro system also being introduced in Surat.
He highlighted that the distinct colors and designs of these high-quality stainless steel trains beautifully embody the culture and traditions of Ahmedabad. The first 'Make in India' train for the city will soon arrive after completing final testing and certification, ready to commence passenger services.
The subsequent nine trains will be delivered gradually from the Titagarh plant over the next 5-6 months. These trains will meet global standards and serve as a source of pride for the state of Gujarat.
Chief Minister Patel praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a visionary leader focused on the future and the well-being of every citizen.
He underscored the vital role of infrastructure in national advancement under PM Modi's leadership, pointing to record-breaking road constructions, doubled airport capacities, and the successful implementation of semi-high-speed Vande Bharat trains.
India's metro network has seen remarkable growth, expanding from 248 kilometres in 2014 to 1,013 kilometres in 2025. During his visit, Patel carefully examined the coaches and discussed their features with senior engineers in detail.
The engineers informed that the train is equipped with advanced fire safety and security systems, designed for fully automated, driverless operation under Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4).
Present during the event were the Chief Minister's Chief Advisor Hasmukh Adhia, Advisor and GMRCL Managing Director SS Rathore, Titagarh Managing Director Umesh Chaudhary, and senior officials from both organizations.
Titagarh Rail Systems is also engaged in producing next-generation Vande Bharat sleeper trains and metro coaches for various cities, including Pune, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Surat, and Ahmedabad.
The company is enhancing its capabilities for high-speed trains and continues to be India's largest wagon manufacturer, also building ships for the navy and specialized applications. This development is set to bolster Ahmedabad's modern public transport system and cater to the city's increasing mobility demands.
