Chennai, Feb 3 (NationPress) The Leader of the Opposition in Tamil Nadu, Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS), has urged the state government to implement stringent measures following the grave allegations made by senior IPS officer and Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Kalpana Nayak, who claims that there was an attempt on her life.

Palaniswami expressed his astonishment regarding the alleged assassination attempt, calling for a comprehensive investigation into Nayak’s accusations and demanding that those implicated face serious legal repercussions.

He also insisted that the ruling DMK government ensure adequate protection for the senior police officer.

Previously, Kalpana Nayak, who served as the ADGP of the Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board (TNUSRB), claimed that a fire at her office on July 29, 2024, was not coincidental but a calculated effort to eliminate her.

Nayak had previously revealed discrepancies in the TNUSRB’s hiring process, particularly concerning the enforcement of communal reservations.

As per her formal complaint to the Tamil Nadu Director General of Police (DGP) Shankar Jiwal, the fire completely destroyed her office. Nayak asserted that if she had been in her chamber, her life would have been at risk.

EPS criticized the ruling DMK government, declaring that such incidents tarnish the state’s law and order reputation.

“If a high-ranking ADGP official faces such threats, how can the average citizen have faith in the system to resolve their issues?” he questioned.

He further called upon Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to take full accountability for the “outrageous state of affairs” within the police department.

The Tamil Nadu DGP’s office responded to Nayak’s allegations, confirming that a thorough investigation was promptly launched after she submitted her complaint on August 14, 2024.

A forensic analysis referenced in the statement determined that the fire was triggered by an electrical short circuit in the air conditioning unit, with evidence of burnt copper wiring.

The DGP’s office dismissed any claims of foul play, asserting that “based on the ongoing investigation, there is no proof of a calculated threat to the life of ADGP Kalpana Nayak.”

However, EPS rejected the findings as insufficient and called for a transparent inquiry to unveil the facts.

He stressed that anyone implicated in the alleged assassination attempt should be prosecuted under the law.

This incident has ignited political debates, with AIADMK leaders demanding justice for Nayak and accusing the DMK government of neglecting the safety of officials.

The opposition has called for the government to focus on the protection of whistleblowers who unveil corruption within governmental institutions.
