Chennai, Jan 19 (NationPress) The leader of the Tamil Nadu Opposition and AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) expressed his disapproval of the DMK-led state government for the increasing number of chain-snatching incidents occurring in Chennai.
He urged Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to acknowledge his accountability for these ongoing crimes.
EPS asserted that there is a lack of safety not only for ordinary women but also for female police personnel under the DMK administration in Tamil Nadu.
In reference to eight chain-snatching incidents reported in just one day across the Chennai and Tambaram Police Commissionerates, he shared his worries on X.
He pointed out a specific case where a chain was stolen from a woman police sub-inspector affiliated with the Greater Chennai Police, labeling the incident as “disturbing”.
Palaniswami characterized these incidents as proof of the “inability” of the state government.
“It is a disgrace that even policewomen cannot walk freely in Tamil Nadu. The DMK government should feel embarrassed,” EPS remarked.
He further insisted that the Chief Minister should take responsibility for these occurrences and prioritize enhancing the state's law and order.
At least 10 chain-snatching incidents were recorded under the Tambaram police jurisdiction near Chennai on Friday (January 17), with victims losing gold chains worth approximately 20 sovereigns, as per police accounts.
One victim, Rajeshwari (50), a shopkeeper in Maraimalai Nagar, was approached by two helmeted youngsters on a motorcycle.
They feigned interest in buying cigarettes and seized her four-sovereign gold chain when she turned to retrieve the item.
Similar thefts were reported in locations such as Guduvanchery, Mudichur, Otteri, Peerkankarai, Manimangalam, and Selaiyur.
In Mudichur, Indira (58), a police officer, was targeted by two men on a motorcycle while she was walking down the street on Friday evening.
This incident was recorded on CCTV, and Indira promptly notified the police control room.
Special police units have been established to apprehend the criminals.
A police official mentioned that two men on a motorcycle were last seen fleeing near Gandhi Road in the area.
