New Delhi, Feb 4 (NationPress) Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday criticized the government for allegedly concealing the actual death toll from the Maha Kumbh stampede and called for disciplinary action against the officials he accused of conspiring to mask the true figures.

The stampede, which occurred during Mauni Amavasya, a significant day for Amrit Snans, resulted in approximately 30 devotees losing their lives and over 60 others being injured.

During his address in Lok Sabha regarding the Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address, Akhilesh Yadav asserted that the government was intentionally withholding death toll information and insisted on the necessity for a comprehensive report on the Maha Kumbh, including details about the availability of doctors, medications, and other essential arrangements within Parliament.

“The government freely shares the budgetary figures, but this transparency is absent concerning the Maha Kumbh. I urge them to disclose the true numbers of those who perished during the Maha Kumbh. I demand a meeting of all parties to deliberate on this tragic incident in Prayagraj,” he stated.

The SP leader further suggested that the Army should oversee disaster management for the Maha Kumbh.

“The statistics regarding deaths, treatment of the injured, availability of medications, healthcare professionals, food, water, and transport should be presented in Parliament,” he insisted.

Akhilesh also criticized the state government for its ineffective and poor arrangements in Prayagraj, alleging that it focused more on publicity than on public safety.

He asserted that the truth was being intentionally obscured and demanded strict consequences for those involved in this scheme.

“There must be rigorous punitive measures regarding the tragedy, and those responsible for concealing the truth should face repercussions. We challenge the double-engine government: if there is no guilt, why were the figures suppressed and erased? Erasing the truth is a crime,” he remarked.

Akhilesh’s recent allegations come after claims from his party’s MPs that corpses were buried or disposed of in the river to diminish the impact of the disaster.
