Allocation of Responsibilities Among Newly Appointed Ministers in Assam

Guwahati, Dec 9 (NationPress) Four newly appointed ministers in the Cabinet led by Himanta Biswa Sarma are set to receive their portfolios on Monday.

As per sources, a substantial restructuring of the departments overseen by the ministers will take place.

A senior leader indicated that numerous ministers have been managing multiple departments for the past three years, and several of these responsibilities will be reassigned to the newly appointed ministers.

Additionally, a new department called the Barak Valley Development Department has been established, which will be led by a minister from that region.

In its recent meeting, the state Cabinet approved the formation of the Barak Valley Development Department, aimed at fostering new opportunities for the development of the southern Assam region.

An official statement remarked, “To facilitate administration access for citizens and promote equitable development in the Barak Valley, the Cabinet has sanctioned the establishment of the Barak Valley Development Department. This initiative will aid the residents of Cachar, Sribhumi, and Hailakandi through accelerated growth and job creation for supporting staff.”

The Cabinet also endorsed a Production Linked Incentive of ₹2/litre of ethanol for three years for three grain-based ethanol manufacturing units, aimed at enhancing farmers' income and transitioning towards cleaner fuel alternatives.

Moreover, the Cabinet ratified a Compensation Policy for the legal heirs or Next of Kin (NOK) of prisoners who face unnatural deaths.

The ministers Prasanta Phookan, Kaushik Rai, Krishnendu Paul, and Rupesh Goala took their oaths a few days ago.

This marks the first expansion of the Cabinet since Himanta Biswa Sarma assumed the Chief Minister's role three years prior.

Within the Cabinet, there were four vacant positions—three of which have existed since the beginning of Sarma's tenure as Chief Minister, while one became vacant when former minister Parimal Suklabaidya won this year's Lok Sabha elections in the state.
