Can HM Amit Shah Overrule Rahul Gandhi in SIR Debate?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Dec 10 (NationPress) A fiery confrontation took place in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday when Union Home Minister Amit Shah challenged the objections raised by Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi during a discussion concerning electoral reforms. Shah firmly stated that “Parliament will not operate under your instructions” as Gandhi questioned the reforms and urged the Minister to engage in a debate regarding his three press conferences.
When Rahul Gandhi insisted that the Home Minister “first respond to my question from yesterday,” Shah emphasized his extensive 30 years of experience in legislative bodies and declared that Gandhi “cannot dictate the order of my speaking.”
Shah countered Congress's criticisms about the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls with a strategic rebuttal. He accused the Opposition of fabricating a “false narrative” regarding electoral reforms and dismissed Gandhi’s allegations of “vote chori” as politically charged.
He defended the SIR, which is being executed by the Election Commission (EC), as a constitutional and long-established procedure aimed at purging voter lists of deceased individuals and foreign nationals.
“Should illegal immigrants have a say in elections?” he posed.
The Home Minister consistently referenced electoral history to refute Opposition assertions that the SIR was politically motivated, highlighting that thorough revisions were performed numerous times from 1952 to 2004, predominantly during Congress leadership.
“From Jawaharlal Nehru to Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Narasimha Rao, and Manmohan Singh - no leader ever contested comprehensive revisions. Why the uproar now?” he inquired.
“History can unsettle some, yet without it, no process or society can advance,” he added. He criticized the dissemination of “one-sided lies” over the past four months aimed at misleading the public about the SIR.
Shah charged that the Opposition parties are “concerned because the populace does not support them,” asserting that the cleanup would eliminate “illegal immigrants who support them.”
