Chennai, Oct 28 (NationPress) The president of Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), Anbumani Ramadoss, has expressed his vehement disapproval regarding the Tamil Nadu government's alleged plan to commence operations at 30 new sand quarries statewide, labeling it a "disturbing maneuver to commodify the state’s natural resources for individual profit."
In a statement released on Tuesday, Anbumani pointed to media reports indicating that, in the initial phase, eight new sand quarries are set to begin functioning from November 1—three in Pudukkottai district, two in Cuddalore, and one each in Thanjavur, Namakkal, and Ranipet.
"Even after numerous revelations of extensive mismanagement, the DMK government continues to exploit Tamil Nadu's mineral resources. This behavior is utterly reprehensible," he stated.
The PMK leader reminded that since taking office in 2021, the DMK government has already initiated operations at 25 sand quarries across nine rivers, including the Cauvery, Kollidam, Vaippar, and Vellar as of May 2023.
Authorization had been given to extract 7.51 lakh units of sand from these locations. However, he claimed a follow-up survey by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in September 2023 uncovered that 27.7 lakh units of sand had been extracted—almost four times the amount that was approved.
"This indicates that the quantity of sand removed in just a few months is equivalent to what should have been mined over a decade. There are strong allegations that the illicit revenue generated from this sand extraction has been funneled into illegal financial practices," Anbumani remarked.
He further pointed out that despite such alarming findings, the DMK government has been relentlessly pursuing the reopening or expansion of sand quarries. He asserted that the recent environmental clearance for new mining operations is merely a façade for organized exploitation.
He cautioned that the over-extraction of riverbeds has already led to significant groundwater depletion and seawater intrusion in coastal regions, stating that the PMK has long advocated for the construction of check dams to recharge aquifers.
"Instead of safeguarding nature, the DMK government is ravaging it out of greed," he charged.
Anbumani called for a CBI investigation into what he termed "the largest mineral scam in Tamil Nadu's history," asserting that the electorate will soon deliver a decisive verdict in the coming Assembly elections.
"The purported Dravidian Model has devolved into a Looting Model. The DMK will face accountability," he concluded.
