Itanagar/Guwahati, Feb 11 (NationPress) The Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women (APSCW) has filed a complaint with the National Commission for Women (NCW) calling for action against social media influencer Elvish Yadav for his derogatory and racial remarks directed at Chum Darang, an actress and finalist of 'Bigg Boss 18', as confirmed by officials on Tuesday.

In a letter addressed to the NCW, APSCW Chairperson Kenjum Pakam alleged that Yadav, in a recent viral video, made offensive and racial comments about Miss Chum Darang, who is also a former Miss Arunachal and a contestant on 'Bigg Boss'.

Pakam stated that Yadav's remarks not only demean Darang but also insult women throughout the northeastern region of India.

"Yadav's comments on social media have damaged the reputation of Chum Darang personally, as well as that of women from the Northeast in general. Such actions and derogatory remarks instigate fear and intimidation among women from the Northeast who aspire to make their mark in the Bollywood film industry, rendering them vulnerable and marginalized," the letter detailed.

In her correspondence to the NCW, the APSCW Chairperson expressed her concerns regarding this alarming situation and urged the national body to take suo-motu cognizance against Yadav for his racial comments and to ensure justice for Chum Darang and the sentiments of the community.

Responding to the controversy, Darang stated on Instagram: "Disrespecting someone's identity and name is not 'fun'. Mocking someone's accomplishments is not 'banter'. It's time to distinguish between humor and hate."

She criticized Yadav for belittling her achievements: "What’s more disappointing is that this situation extends beyond my ethnicity. My efforts and a film supported by a visionary like Sanjay Leela Bhansali were also belittled," she further remarked.

Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, currently in Singapore promoting the Advantage Assam 2.0 business summit scheduled for February 25 and 26, mentioned in a post on X that the Guwahati police have registered an FIR against several YouTubers and social media influencers, including Ashish Chanchlani, Jaspreet Singh, Apoorva Mukhija, Ranveer Allahabadia, and Samay Raina, for promoting obscenity and engaging in sexually explicit discussions on a show titled 'India's Got Latent'.

The Chief Minister indicated that the Guwahati Crime Branch has initiated a case under the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), 2023, the IT Act, 2000, the Cinematograph Act, 1952, and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986.

An investigation is actively ongoing, as stated by CM Sarma.
