Key Takeaways
Itanagar, Dec 23 (NationPress) The Arunachal Pradesh Police have apprehended two additional individuals, bringing the total number of arrests to five, all hailing from Jammu and Kashmir, for their purported roles in espionage activities associated with Pakistani operatives, as stated by officials on Tuesday.
A senior police official reported that the latest arrests occurred in the Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir on December 18, with the suspects transported to Arunachal Pradesh on Monday.
The detained individuals have been identified as Aijaz Ahmed Bhat and Bashir Ahmad Ganai, who are presently in police custody in Itanagar.
With these developments, the total number of individuals implicated in the espionage case has reached five.
According to the official, the suspects were allegedly gathering sensitive intelligence during their visits to Arunachal Pradesh and relaying it to their Pakistani handlers.
Previously, on November 21, police had arrested Nazir Ahmad Malik and Sabir Ahmed Mir, both from Kupwara district, based on credible intelligence regarding their suspected espionage activities. Another suspect, Shabir Ahmed Khan, also from the same district, was later apprehended in Itanagar.
Nazir Ahmad Malik was initially detained in Ganga village, and following his information, Sabir Ahmed Mir was taken into custody from Abotani Colony in the Itanagar Capital Region the same day.
The official indicated that a spy network was operating out of Arunachal Pradesh, with the five arrested individuals reportedly part of that network.
This operation was spearheaded by Itanagar Superintendent of Police Jummar Basar, in close collaboration with intelligence agencies.
Senior police and intelligence personnel are currently interrogating the detainees, with further arrests contingent on the findings of the ongoing investigation, the official noted.
In light of these events, the Arunachal Pradesh Police have urged the public to ensure appropriate police verification before permitting anyone to stay in their homes on a rental or other basis.
“Individuals must not allow anyone to reside in their homes without proper verification,” the police emphasized.
The official also clarified that another individual, who was previously detained in Miao, Changlang district, was released after investigators found no evidence connecting him to the espionage activities.
The police reported that the arrested individuals were primarily blanket vendors who traveled throughout the state, allegedly collecting information while selling their products.
