Srinagar, Dec 23 (NationPress) Two individuals hailing from the Kashmir Valley have been apprehended by law enforcement in Arunachal Pradesh for purportedly engaging in espionage for Pakistan, as announced by officials on Tuesday.
According to the officials, the police in Itanagar detained the two men from the Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir on allegations of spying and gathering sensitive information for their handlers located in Pakistan.
“The individuals taken into custody have been named as Aijaz Ahmed Bhat and Bashir Ahmad Ganai. With these arrests, the count of individuals implicated in the espionage investigation has escalated to five,” officials reported, citing IGP (Law & Order) Arunachal Pradesh, Chukhu Apa, who informed reporters that the arrests occurred on December 18.
“The suspects have been transported to the state of Arunachal Pradesh from Kupwara, and they currently remain in our police custody. This brings the total number of apprehensions in this case to five,” Apa stated.
He revealed that the suspects were gathering sensitive data from various regions of Arunachal Pradesh and relaying it to their Pakistani handlers.
”We are currently awaiting the forensic report. The preliminary probe has indicated that they have been transmitting sensitive information to their handlers across the nation. Our investigation is ongoing, and more details will be disclosed as we proceed,” the IGP mentioned.
Previously, on November 21, the police in Itanagar arrested Nazir Ahmad Malik and Sabir Ahmed Mir, both from Kupwara district, after receiving credible intelligence about their potential involvement in espionage activities.
Following that, another suspect, Shabir Ahmed Khan, also from Kupwara, was taken into custody in Itanagar.
“We were acting on credible intelligence regarding a spy network operating within Arunachal Pradesh. Under the guidance of Itanagar SP Jummar Basar, our team worked diligently to make these arrests. Two suspects were apprehended in Kupwara, and three others were detained from various locations within the Itanagar Capital Region,” the IGP conveyed to reporters.
The arrested individuals were primarily blanket vendors who traveled throughout the state to gather information, as indicated by the IGP. He also urged residents of Itanagar to remain alert and verify documents before allowing anyone to stay in their homes for rent.
“I encourage the citizens of Itanagar to check documents and verify them with the police before permitting anyone to reside in your house on rent. Neglecting this could lead to complications,” he advised.
