Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Itanagar, Feb 23 (NationPress) In a momentous development aimed at addressing the longstanding inter-state boundary dispute, the inaugural border pillar along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border has been established at Seijosa, as reported by officials.
The border pillar's installation was carefully overseen by representatives from both states on Sunday to guarantee precision and mutual consensus on site.
Key figures present at the pillar's erection included Beni Lego, the Deputy Commissioner of Arunachal Pradesh’s Pakke Kessang district, and Munindra Nath Ngatey, the Deputy Commissioner of Assam’s Biswanath district, alongside senior police officials, community leaders, and village headmen.
The establishment of this border pillar aligns with the Namsai Declaration, which was signed in July 2022 and set the groundwork for resolving the protracted boundary dispute along the 804-km inter-state border dividing the two northeastern states.
Arunachal Pradesh's Chief Minister Pema Khandu hailed the installation of the border pillar as a pivotal advancement that embodies the essence of the Namsai Declaration.
On the social media platform X, the Chief Minister remarked: "A historic milestone has been reached in the Arunachal Pradesh–Assam boundary resolution journey with the successful erection of the first official border pillar at Seijosa in Pakke Kessang district."
He emphasized that this progress signifies a shift from years of ambiguity toward peaceful coexistence, clarity, and stability for the communities situated along the border.
"The initiative was meticulously coordinated by a joint team of senior officials from both states, ensuring mutual agreement and precision on-site. This accomplishment is a testament to ongoing dialogue and proactive leadership, particularly by Minister Biyuram Waghe, the Chairman of the Regional Committee for Pakke Kessang, in conjunction with the diligent efforts of district administrations and local representatives," CM Khandu added.
He remarked that the Seijosa border pillar provides a framework for the remaining demarcation process, enhances collaboration between the two northeastern states, and lays the groundwork for enduring harmony, development, and trust among the populations residing in the border territories.
Additionally, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his Arunachal Pradesh counterpart Pema Khandu finalized an agreement in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi in April 2023 to tackle the inter-state border dispute.
Union Home Minister Shah previously indicated that since 2018, the Union government, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, has enacted several accords, including agreements for the resolution of Reang refugees in Tripura and initiatives aimed at curbing violence in the Northeast region.
Assam is also engaged in inter-state border disputes with Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Mizoram, with separate talks currently in progress with these states to resolve their respective issues.
