Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Responds to Congress Criticism Regarding Manmohan Singh's Farewell

Guwahati, Dec 29 (NationPress) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma issued a strong rebuttal to Congress after opposition leaders alleged that the state government exhibited disrespect towards former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during his final rites.

CM Sarma emphasized his point with a pointed remark, stating, "Manmohan Singh deserved far better, both in life and in death."

In a post on X, he expressed, "Dr. Manmohan Singh, a leader of unmatched integrity and intellect, deserved far more respect, both in his life and in his passing. It is profoundly upsetting to see the Congress Party trying to create a controversy around his last journey, detracting from the dignity it truly warrants."

Furthermore, CM Sarma accused Congress of neglecting the legacies of former Prime Minister Narasimha Rao and former President Pranab Mukherjee.

"This is not a new occurrence; the Congress has consistently shown a lack of regard for its own leaders, whether it be Narasimha Rao or Pranab Mukherjee," he remarked.

In his X post, the Chief Minister noted, "The citizens of India have paid Dr. Singh a respectful and heartfelt tribute, acknowledging his significant contributions to the country. Prime Minister @narendramodi Ji has already declared a deserving memorial to celebrate his legacy, reflecting the nation’s appreciation. However, it is sorrowful to see some individuals attempting to politicize this moment of mourning for personal gain."

According to CM Sarma, the public still recalls the humiliations faced by Manmohan Singh during his time in office, including the well-known gestures from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi that undermined Singh's authority.

"Such incidents are ingrained in the nation's collective memory. At the very least, we should ensure that Dr. Singh’s legacy is honored without the taint of political opportunism in his passing. It is imperative that we celebrate his memory with the respect and dignity he rightfully deserves, devoid of any discord or manipulation from Congress leadership," he stated.

CM Sarma's remarks were made in response to Assam Congress leader Debabrata Saikia claiming that the state government breached its decision to observe a seven-day mourning period for the late former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

He also confirmed that all official entertainment events have been canceled for the upcoming seven days.
