Assam Observes 7-Day Mourning for Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh

Guwahati, Dec 27 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, declared a 7-day state mourning on Friday to honor the memory of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who sadly passed away on Thursday.
In his announcement, the Chief Minister indicated that all official entertainment events will be suspended for the next week.
On his X account, Sarma stated, “To pay tribute to Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji, Former Prime Minister of India, the Government of Assam will observe a 7-day state mourning from 26.12.2024 to 01.01.2025. Throughout this period, the national flag will be flown at half-mast at all state government facilities, and all official entertainment programs will be canceled.”
Earlier on Thursday, Sarma expressed his condolences regarding the death of the former Prime Minister.
Sarma shared on X, “I had the honor of knowing Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji since 1991 when he was first elected to the Rajya Sabha from Assam, a state he represented for 28 years. Dr. Sahab exemplified humility and never succumbed to the allure of power. His simplicity and decency, coupled with his intellectual strength, were always evident in our discussions.”
“During his Prime Ministership, I was fortunate to engage with him on various issues concerning Assam, where he consistently listened patiently and showed a strong commitment to social matters. Coming from modest beginnings in post-partition India, he dedicated himself to serving the nation in various esteemed roles,” Sarma continued.
He added, “A generation of Indians will forever remember his crucial role in transitioning to a free market economy and dismantling decades of outdated socialist policies. With his passing, the nation has lost a true patriot, an outstanding scholar, an unconventional politician, and an exceptional statesman. My heartfelt condolences to Gursharan Madam, his family, and supporters. Om Shanti.
Dr. Manmohan Singh, a distinguished economist and the architect of India’s economic reforms, passed away on Thursday at the age of 92. He had been admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi due to a decline in his health.
