Did Assam CM Sarma Really File Defamation Cases Against Congress Leaders?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, Feb 10 (NationPress) - Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took a significant legal step on Tuesday by initiating both civil and criminal defamation lawsuits, claiming Rs 500 crore in damages from prominent Congress figures Gaurav Gogoi, Bhupesh Baghel, and Jitendra Singh Alwar. This action marks a notable escalation in the ongoing political clash between the ruling BJP and the opposition party.
In a statement shared on X, CM Sarma indicated that the lawsuits were prompted by what he termed as “false, malicious and defamatory” claims made against him during a Congress press briefing.
He emphasized his commitment to not yield to political intimidation or public criticism.
“The time for hit-and-run politics has ended. If they possess even a fraction of bravery or proof, they should present every accusation in a court of law,” the Chief Minister declared.
This legal move followed Sarma's earlier announcement regarding his intention to seek judicial recourse against the Congress leaders, reaffirming his readiness to explore both civil and criminal avenues.
CM Sarma further charged the Congress leadership with orchestrating a coordinated smear campaign, alleging that the offensive was orchestrated under the guidance of the Gandhi family.
He urged the opposition to concentrate on substantial issues and governance instead of resorting to personal attacks.
The Chief Minister’s actions were a response to a press conference at Rajiv Bhawan, where Congress MP and Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, alongside former Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, Bhupesh Baghel, unveiled a digital platform named 'WhoIsHBS.com'.
According to Gogoi, the site aims to examine CM Sarma’s political history and governance practices, containing various documents, videos, and materials associated with the Chief Minister's public persona.
Gogoi stressed that this initiative was designed to present “facts” to the people of Assam and to enhance accountability.
Additionally, he announced the distribution of a pamphlet containing similar content throughout the state as part of a larger outreach initiative.
Echoing Gogoi’s sentiments, Baghel highlighted the necessity of transparency and accountability as fundamental aspects of democracy, especially as Assam approaches pivotal political events.
