Guwahati, February 1 (NationPress) Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday expressed his appreciation to the Centre for the announcement regarding the construction of a urea plant in Namrup, located in the Dibrugarh district, as outlined in the Union Budget 2025.

During her speech on the Union Budget, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman disclosed plans for a new urea plant in Namrup, which will have an annual production capacity of 12.7 lakh metric tonnes, designed to enhance fertiliser supply in the area.

In a post on X, Sarma referred to the day as a “historic moment” for Assam, stating, “Union Budget 2025 has introduced a 12.7 lakh MT urea plant in Namrup, fulfilling a long-awaited request from Assam's populace.”

He emphasized its importance by adding, “Following the semiconductor facility in Jagiroad, this urea plant will transform the entire North East. It will not only assist us in achieving self-sufficiency in fertiliser availability but also optimize our natural gas resources.”

Sarma expressed his gratitude further, saying, “On behalf of the citizens of Assam, I extend my sincere thanks to Hon'ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji and Hon'ble Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman Ji.”

In her presentation of the NDA government's second comprehensive budget of its third term and her eighth consecutive budget, FM Sitharaman reaffirmed the government's dedication to enhancing fertiliser production.

“To enhance urea availability, a facility with an annual capacity of 12.7 lakh metric tonnes will be constructed in Namrup,” she stated in Parliament.

She also highlighted the government's ongoing initiatives in the fertiliser sector, mentioning that three inactive urea plants in the Eastern region had been revitalized.

This announcement follows ongoing discussions between Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Union Minister JP Nadda concerning the expansion of the Brahmaputra Valley Fertiliser Corporation Ltd (BVFCL) in Namrup, which plays a crucial role in the region’s fertiliser industry.
