Guwahati, Sep 18 (NationPress) The Assam Congress has formally filed a police report accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of disseminating “AI-generated propaganda videos” via social media platforms. This action is claimed to be designed to provoke communal unrest and undermine Congress leaders in the lead-up to the upcoming Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections in the state.
The complaint was submitted by Bedabrata Bora, the Chairman of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee’s (APCC) Media Department, at the Dispur Police Station.
The allegations against the BJP's state social media team include “criminal conspiracy, promoting enmity, and violating the Model Code of Conduct”.
The FIR specifically names Dilip Saikia, the Assam BJP President, Shaktidhar Deka, the state social media convener, along with other members involved in the party's digital initiatives.
According to Congress, a video released on September 15 titled “Assam without BJP” portrayed a manipulated image of the state, insinuating that Assam would become dominated by Muslims if the BJP were to lose power.
This video reportedly featured images of meat shops, liquor sales, and Islamic symbols, coupled with altered statistics claiming that Muslims would constitute 90 percent of the population.
The video allegedly contained messages such as “choose your vote carefully”, which the Congress party argues were intended to incite fear among voters.
Moreover, the Congress party asserted that the BJP's social media apparatus had previously propagated similar content, including a video shared on September 12.
Fresh instances of edited videos have also surfaced on platform X this week, depicting illegal immigrants allegedly taking over prominent Guwahati sites like the airport, Nehru Stadium, and the historic Rang Ghar amphitheatre.
The videos purportedly featured slogans such as “We can't let this dream of paijan be true”.
The Congress is demanding the police conduct a forensic investigation, confiscate devices from the BJP's social media department, and instruct social media platforms to eliminate the content as per the IT Act, 2000.
Additionally, they have requested the intervention of the Election Commission due to perceived breaches of the model code of conduct.
In response to the situation, Assam Congress President Gaurav Gogoi remarked: “The BJP's IT cell is trying to spread fear and division, but such propaganda cannot dent the Assamese society. Assam deserves politics that uplifts, not degrades.”
