Assam Government Enhances Tourism Initiatives Surrounding Kamakhya Temple: Minister Dass

Guwahati, Dec 10 (NationPress) Assam Tourism Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass stated on Tuesday that the state government is focusing on enhancing tourism around the Kamakhya temple, known for attracting numerous devotees from various parts of the country.

Following a recent expansion of the Cabinet under Himanta Biswa Sarma, Dass has assumed responsibility for the tourism department.

On the same day, the minister visited the Kamakhya temple to seek blessings.

He expressed, “The advancement of tourism centered on the Kamakhya temple is our primary focus. This location draws devotees from all over the nation and even internationally throughout the year.

“With my new role in the tourism department from the recent Cabinet expansion, I have come today to receive blessings from Goddess Kamakhya and will engage with visitors to uncover new avenues for tourism promotion here.”

Importantly, akin to the Kashi-Vishwanath Temple Corridor in Varanasi, the Assam government plans to establish a corridor for the Kamakhya Temple.

A senior government official indicated that the open area surrounding the temple will expand from its current 3,000 square feet to approximately 100,000 square feet, distributed across three levels.

The access corridor's width is set to increase from its current 8 to 10 feet to around 27 to 30 feet.

Additionally, six significant temples in Nilachal, previously unseen by the public, will be restored to their original glory.

To alleviate pressure during the Ambubachi Mela and other major festivals held at the Kamakhya Temple, a holding capacity for 8,000 to 10,000 pilgrims will be established as part of this project, according to the official.

In parallel, the government has proposed a ropeway at the Kamakhya temple located atop Nilachal Hills in Guwahati.

Reports indicate that a comprehensive study has been conducted by the state government to facilitate a ropeway service from Kamakhya railway station to the temple.

Earlier, CM Sarma mentioned that the ropeway would significantly reduce travel time for pilgrims and visitors arriving by train by 55–60 percent.

Moreover, it will enhance tourism potential and provide stunning views of Guwahati.

The ropeway, designed to carry 1,000 people per hour, will operate in both directions, covering the distance to Nilachal hills in just seven minutes.

The state government has set a target for the completion of the ropeway by June 2026.
