Assam MLA Nihar Ranjan Das Resigns from BJP After Ticket Denial
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, March 19 (NationPress) In a pivotal political shift ahead of the Assam Assembly elections, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Nihar Ranjan Das announced his resignation from the party's primary membership on Thursday after he was not granted a party ticket for the Dholai Assembly constituency, located in the Barak Valley region.
In his resignation letter addressed to Dilip Saikia, the Assam BJP President, Das emphasized that he had dedicated himself to the party with honesty and sincerity during his tenure as the MLA of Dholai, striving to enhance the party's reputation among constituents in a brief period.
However, he voiced his disappointment over the lack of recognition for his efforts and the denial of a party ticket for the forthcoming elections.
"Consequently, I am submitting my resignation from the primary membership of BJP," he stated, urging the party leadership to accept his resignation and relieve him of all duties.
This development follows the BJP's announcement of Amiya Kanti Das as its candidate for the Dholai Assembly seat, replacing the incumbent legislator Nihar Ranjan Das.
The decision seems to have sparked unrest within the local party faction, leading to Das's swift resignation after the announcement.
Dholai, a reserved constituency in southern Assam's Barak Valley, is regarded as a crucial seat for the BJP in the area.
Party insiders suggested that this ticket allocation is part of a broader strategy to reshape candidates and bolster the party's electoral chances.
On the same day, the BJP released its initial list of candidates for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, presenting nominees for 88 constituencies statewide.
The list includes notable BJP figures such as Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who will contest from Jalukbari, an Assembly seat he currently holds and is considered a BJP bastion.
Senior Minister Chandramohan Patowary has been nominated from Tihu, while state Finance Minister Ajanta Neog will run from her previous seat, Golaghat.
In significant urban constituencies, the BJP has selected Pradyut Bordoloi from Dispur, Diplu Ranjan Sarmah from New Guwahati, and Vijay Kumar Gupta from Guwahati Central, underscoring a strong emphasis on maintaining control over its strongholds.
Bordoloi recently joined the BJP, severing long-standing ties with Congress, and also resigned from his position as the Nagaon Lok Sabha MP.
