Bijoya Chakravarty Urges Assam BJP to Prioritize Party Unity Over Ticket Disputes
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, March 26 (NationPress) In light of growing dissatisfaction within the BJP regarding the refusal of tickets to numerous incumbent legislators as the Assam Assembly elections approach, veteran leader and former MP Bijoya Chakravarty emphasized on Thursday that the party must prioritize its collective mission over individual ambitions, urging both leaders and workers to refrain from dissent.
During the inauguration of BJP candidate Diplu Ranjan Sharma's election office in the New Guwahati constituency, the 86-year-old Chakravarty stated that the denial of a party ticket should not trigger internal opposition.
“The party holds greater significance than any ticket. Opposition to the party should not arise merely due to the denial of a ticket. The BJP has made its selections after careful consideration, and there should be no space for questioning that,” she remarked.
Her comments come amid rising discontent within the state unit, where at least 18 sitting MLAs, including several ministers, have been excluded from the candidate list as part of the party’s reshuffling strategy ahead of the elections.
While some leaders have voiced their disappointment publicly, the BJP leadership has asserted that the selections were made with an emphasis on winnability, performance, and long-term organizational goals.
Chakravarty, regarded as one of the party's senior-most figures, stressed the importance of discipline and unity at this critical electoral juncture. “The strength of the BJP lies in its organizational integrity. Leaders and workers must collaborate to secure victory,” she said.
She highlighted the party’s governance achievements, stating that the BJP government in Assam has fulfilled its commitments to development and security, which should be the focal point during the campaign.
The veteran leader expressed confidence in Diplu Ranjan Sharma's candidacy, encouraging voters to rally behind him.
As the BJP prepares for a pivotal electoral contest in Assam, the leadership is relying on its governance record and organizational prowess, even as internal strife over ticket allocations persists.
Notably, many BJP leaders who were discontent with the ticket distribution and had intended to run as independent candidates have retracted their nominations following outreach from senior party officials.
