Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday, 17 July said the state government is making sustained investments in sports infrastructure, training facilities, and equipment support to help young athletes compete at the highest international level. The announcement, shared via a post on social media, outlines a multi-pronged strategy spanning stadium redevelopment, scientific coaching centres, and grassroots equipment distribution across all Assembly constituencies.

Key Initiatives Announced

According to details shared by CM Sarma, the government is establishing High Performance Sports Training and Rehabilitation Centres in three cities across Assam. These centres are designed to provide scientific coaching alongside injury management facilities — a step beyond conventional training setups that have historically been limited in the state.

The government is also distributing sports equipment to youth clubs in every Assembly constituency, with the stated aim of encouraging grassroots participation and identifying promising talent from both rural and urban areas.

Stadium Redevelopment and New Facilities

Among the flagship infrastructure projects, the state is redeveloping the Radha Govinda Baruah Sports Complex and constructing an open stadium at the Amingaon Sports Complex. The expansion of Khanikar Stadium in Dibrugarh is also underway, aimed at strengthening sporting facilities in Upper Assam and enabling the region to host larger-scale events.

Notably, an Archery Academy is being set up at Sonari to leverage the region's traditional strength in the discipline. The academy is intended to produce athletes capable of representing Assam — and India — at national and international competitions.

The Government's Broader Vision

CM Sarma framed the investments as part of a continuum — taking athletes 'from local fields to the global arena' — and described the approach as a combination of infrastructure, training support, and equipment access. 'We are investing in our youth to nurture sporting talent and help them realise their dreams on the global arena. This is being done through a mix of infrastructure, training and equipment support,' Sarma said in his social media post.

The Chief Minister has repeatedly positioned sports development as a core pillar of the state's youth empowerment agenda, emphasising modern facilities, quality coaching, and wider access to sporting resources as the foundation for building a strong athlete pipeline from Assam.

Assam has historically produced talent in disciplines such as archery, football, and athletics, but has often struggled with the infrastructure gap that prevents grassroots athletes from graduating to elite competition. This comes amid a broader national push to improve India's medal tally in international events, with several northeastern states increasingly positioning themselves as talent hubs.
