Ayushman Vay Vandana Yojana: A Lifeline for Senior Citizens in Uttarakhand's Chamoli District
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Dehradun, February 25 (NationPress) The Ayushman Vay Vandana Yojana, initiated under the Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Aarogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) in 2024, is extending its reach across the nation, including its remote and far-flung areas.
This scheme has become a vital support for the residents of Chamoli district in Uttarakhand.
As a border district, Chamoli has made significant strides in enrolling senior citizens, thus qualifying them as beneficiaries of this scheme.
Over 500 eligible individuals have received their Ayushman Vay Vandana cards, empowering them to take advantage of complimentary healthcare services.
Historically, accessing healthcare has posed a considerable challenge for those living in isolated regions and rugged terrains. However, the implementation of the Vay Vandana Yojana has greatly alleviated their struggles and simplified the process of obtaining medical care.
With these cards, elderly recipients can receive treatment at designated hospitals without incurring any costs. Previously, seeking medical attention involved arduous travel, but now, thanks to the Ayushman card, they benefit from free treatment.
Many recipients have expressed their heartfelt appreciation towards the Modi government for this welfare initiative. One beneficiary, Balwant Ram, conveyed deep gratitude for the program, while another, Awal Singh Rawat, remarked on the stark contrast between the current ease of accessing treatment and the difficulties of the past.
To further enhance the scheme's outreach, health department teams are actively visiting villages to register eligible individuals, ensuring that more citizens can benefit.
Importantly, in October 2024, the Central government broadened the AB-PMJAY to offer free treatment benefits of up to Rs 5 lakh per year to all senior citizens aged 70 and above, regardless of their socio-economic background, including tribal groups.
As of December 5 last year, over 93 lakh Ayushman Vay Vandana cards were issued nationwide across various states and union territories.
Additionally, by October 2025, there were 7.89 lakh hospital admissions recorded under the Ayushman Vay Vandana category, amounting to Rs 1741 crore, highlighting the scheme’s impact across implementing states and territories. The expansion of treatment options is continually updated to include new procedures, hospital affiliations, and new beneficiaries as needed.
