Prayagraj, Sep 10 (NationPress) The Allahabad High Court on Wednesday approved bail for senior Samajwadi Party leader and former Uttar Pradesh cabinet minister Azam Khan in connection with the Dungarpur colony eviction case in Rampur.

Khan had approached the high court to contest a 10-year prison sentence handed down to him last year by a special MP/MLA court in Rampur.

This case revolves around the alleged coercive eviction of residents from Dungarpur colony, with multiple accusations of assault, robbery, and intimidation filed.

Justice Sameer Jain, who had reserved the decision on August 12, granted the bail application submitted by Khan.

Alongside him, co-accused contractor Barkat Ali, who received a seven-year sentence from the Rampur court, had also sought relief from the high court.

The Rampur MP/MLA court found Khan guilty on May 30, 2023, convicting him in a case registered at Ganj police station in August 2019 based on a complaint lodged by one Abrar.

The complainant alleged that in December 2016, Khan, with retired circle officer Ale Hasan Khan and contractor Barkat Ali, physically assaulted him, threatened his life, and demolished his property.

In response to Abrar's complaint, several residents from Dungarpur colony also came forward, claiming they were forcibly evicted from their homes. A total of 12 cases were filed against Khan and others, with charges of robbery, theft, assault, and criminal intimidation.

Khan, a prominent SP leader from Rampur and a long-time opponent of the ruling BJP, has been embroiled in numerous criminal cases in his home district over the years.

This bail in the Dungarpur case is perceived as a significant legal respite for him, although his appeals in other ongoing matters remain unresolved.
