Kolkata, April 14 (NationPress) The general secretary of Trinamool Congress and Lok Sabha member, Abhishek Banerjee, raised concerns regarding the detention of Vinesh Chandel, co-founder of the Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC), by Enforcement Directorate officials late Monday night in New Delhi.
“The detention of Vinesh Chandel, occurring less than two weeks before the Bengal elections, is not merely concerning; it undermines the concept of a fair electoral landscape,” Banerjee stated in a social media update shortly after the news of the arrest broke.
Banerjee asserted that at a crucial juncture for West Bengal, when the focus should be on ensuring free and fair elections, such actions convey a threatening message.
“If you collaborate with the opposition, you might be next. This is not democracy; it’s coercion!” he emphasized.
He further accused the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Union government of exhibiting double standards by protecting individuals accused of corruption once they join their ranks.
“Those with serious allegations of corruption seem to receive immunity the moment they align with the BJP, while others are promptly targeted at politically opportune moments. The public is no longer oblivious to this,” Banerjee added.
He pointed out that when institutions such as the Enforcement Directorate and the Election Commission of India, which are supposed to uphold democracy, start functioning as instruments of pressure, public trust begins to wane.
“On one hand, there’s the Election Commission. On the other, agencies like the Enforcement Directorate, National Investigation Agency, and Central Bureau of Investigation intervene at the most sensitive times. This creates an atmosphere of fear rather than fairness,” he stated.
Banerjee emphasized that the arrest of Chandel transcends individual implications; it speaks to the independence of the country’s institutions.
