Kolkata, May 3 (NationPress) Seven nationals from Bangladesh were apprehended on Saturday in Nadia district of West Bengal, where they had been living unlawfully with forged Indian identity papers. This district borders Bangladesh, raising concerns about illegal immigration.
According to sources from the Nadia district police, these seven illegal immigrants—comprising four men and three women—had entered India three years ago, subsequently securing fake Indian identity documents to settle in West Bengal.
“Eventually, some of these individuals moved to different states for employment. This morning, we received a tip-off indicating their gathering at a village near the international border in Hanskhali, likely planning to return to Bangladesh. Our officers intervened and apprehended them before they reached the border,” stated a police official from the district.
All seven were produced in a Nadia district court on Saturday, which remanded them to police custody. Authorities are currently interrogating the arrested individuals to uncover the networks or local agents responsible for providing them with fraudulent identity documents.
In a related incident, the Security Control Organisation (SCO) of Kolkata Police arrested a young man on Saturday for attempting to procure a passport using a counterfeit birth certificate.
The suspect, identified as Muhammad Aftab Alam, is a resident of the Rajabagan area in Kolkata. He had managed to obtain a birth certificate from a distant village panchayat in Malda district.
While the SCO officials were verifying his identity documents submitted with the passport application, they grew suspicious of the birth certificate. A detailed examination confirmed it was indeed a fake, leading to his arrest.
He has since been presented before a city court, which has also remanded him to police custody.
