Srinagar, May 25 (NationPress) The Jammu and Kashmir Police apprehended a drug peddler in the Baramulla district on Sunday after seizing illegal substances from him. A police release stated, “In an ongoing endeavor to combat the drug crisis, Baramulla Police have detained a drug peddler and confiscated contraband from his possession. A police team from Police Station Sheeri, led by the station house officer (SHO), set up a checkpoint on Zandfaran Link Road. During routine checks, one individual named Abid Rasheed Sofi, son of Abdul Rasheed Sofi and a resident of Heewan, Baramulla, was stopped. Upon investigation, 190 grams of a charas-like narcotic were found with him.
The police confirmed his arrest.
“As a result, an FIR No. 30/2025 has been filed under sections 8/20 of the NDPS Act at Police Station Sheeri, and further inquiries are underway,” the statement added.
The police have called on the community to report any instances of drug trafficking or criminal acts to the nearest police station or by calling 112.
“Your participation is vital in our shared battle against the drug problem. We assure the public that law enforcement will persist in taking decisive action against such criminals,” the police station emphasized.
Security forces have initiated a robust operation targeting terrorists, their overground operatives (OGWs), and sympathizers.
This initiative also includes a crackdown on drug traffickers, as intelligence reports suggest that the proceeds from hawala and drug trafficking are often funneled into financing terrorism.
A significant indication of drug abuse originating from across the border is that over 90 percent of illegal drugs and psychoactive substances are funneled into Jammu and Kashmir via the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border (IB). The trans-border smuggling of drugs is also a major concern for states such as Punjab, Rajasthan, and Gujarat, where the IB exists.
