Chennai, March 31 (NationPress) In a bold move to enhance highway infrastructure, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is gearing up to roll out a barrier-free toll collection system at three key toll plazas in Tamil Nadu as part of a nationwide initiative. This new Multi Lane Free Flow (MLFF) system will be operational at the Nemili and Chennasamudram toll plazas along NH-48 and the Paranur toll plaza on NH-45.

The primary goal of this initiative is to eliminate long waiting times, facilitate seamless traffic flow, and minimize travel durations for drivers throughout the region.

In contrast to conventional toll booths that necessitate vehicles to slow down or halt for payment, the MLFF system allows cars to maintain regular highway speeds without any physical barriers. This innovative approach leverages Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology associated with FASTag accounts and Artificial Intelligence-powered Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) systems.

As vehicles navigate through the toll sections, RFID readers capture FASTag information while ANPR cameras photograph vehicle license plates. The system then swiftly verifies this data in real-time and deducts the toll fee from the associated account, ensuring a hassle-free and contactless tolling experience.

NHAI officials have confirmed that preparatory activities are already in progress in Tamil Nadu, with sites identified for the installation of ANPR cameras and requisite infrastructure.

The physical setup is expected to be finalized within the next four months, followed by necessary software integration and testing phases before the system goes live.

Officials emphasized that this dual-layer technology aims to improve accuracy and prevent any potential revenue losses.

If the FASTag detection encounters issues, the ANPR cameras will serve as a fallback mechanism, identifying vehicles for toll processing. On controlled-access highways, this technology may also allow for toll calculations based on the precise distance traveled, utilizing entry and exit records.

The MLFF's introduction is anticipated to substantially decrease fuel consumption and reduce vehicle emissions by eradicating idling at toll booths.

Furthermore, it will contribute to lowering the costs associated with maintaining traditional toll facilities.

Tamil Nadu is among the pioneering states to embrace this cutting-edge tolling system, positioning itself as a leader in India's journey towards smarter, quicker, and more efficient highway travel.
