Baruipur rape-murder: SIT finds digital evidence of pre-planned crime, NCW seeks ATR
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the alleged rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl at Baruipur in South 24 Parganas district, West Bengal, has uncovered crucial digital evidence suggesting the crime was pre-planned, according to sources close to the investigation. The victim went missing on the evening of 4 July and her body was recovered from a pond in Baruipur on the morning of 5 July.
Key Digital Evidence
According to an insider from the Baruipur District Police, mobile tower location data places all three arrested accused at the same location between 4:30 pm and 11 pm on 4 July — a window that coincides with the estimated time the crime was committed. Analysis of call records further indicates that the alleged planning was orchestrated by prime accused Ananda Sarkar, with the other two — Pravas Mondal and Dibakar Sardar — reportedly acting on his instructions.
The family of the victim had stated that the girl was last seen at 6 pm on 4 July, placing her disappearance squarely within the timeframe flagged by investigators.
Custody and Court Proceedings
Pravas Mondal and Dibakar Sardar were produced before a district court in Baruipur on Monday and remanded to police custody for 14 days. Prime accused Ananda Sarkar, who was arrested on Monday afternoon, is scheduled to be produced before the same court on Tuesday, with the Public Prosecutor seeking police custody for him as well.
'Once the police get the custody of all three accused, they will be interrogated together by the investigating officials to get a clear picture of the entire planning and modus operandi of the crime,' the Baruipur District Police insider said.
Political Response and Family Outreach
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari was scheduled to visit Baruipur on Tuesday to meet the victim's family. A delegation from the West Bengal unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by state municipal affairs and urban development minister Agnimitra Paul, was also set to travel to Baruipur on Tuesday to interact with the family.
NCW Takes Suo Motu Cognizance
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognizance of the Baruipur case and has sought a detailed Action Taken Report (ATR) from the Director General of Police, West Bengal, within seven days. The Commission has sought confirmation that an FIR has been registered under the appropriate provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the POCSO Act, along with details on arrests, forensic and post-mortem examinations, and support extended to the victim's family.
The NCW has also sought a report on the alleged mob lynching that followed the crime, including an inquiry into any lapses in policing and the action taken against those involved. All three accused are currently in custody as investigators work to establish the full chain of events.
