Kolkata, Oct 6 (NationPress) The BJP state president, Samik Bhattacharya, toured the flood-stricken regions of Jalpaiguri district after arriving in North Bengal on Monday. Accompanied by BJP Lok Sabha MP Manoj Tigga and Jayanta Roy, he engaged with the affected locals and promised them every possible support.
Bhattacharya arrived in North Bengal early Monday to oversee ongoing rescue efforts in an area severely impacted by landslides due to heavy rains.
In contrast to BJP MP Khagen Murmu, Bhattacharya faced no opposition from residents. He plans to head back to Kolkata later tonight.
On his way to North Bengal, Bhattacharya took a moment to address the media outside the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport.
The BJP Rajya Sabha MP reiterated his criticism of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for hosting the Durga Puja carnival on Sunday, despite the natural disaster affecting North Bengal.
"It’s absurd to expect compassion from this administration. No other state in India has faced such an intolerant, vindictive, and inept government. The administration has done nothing to ease the suffering of North Bengal's residents. They have devastated the region and exploited its resources. The populace has lost faith in a government that prioritizes fairs, carnivals, and celebrations over their welfare," Bhattacharya commented.
On Sunday, BJP MP from the Darjeeling constituency, Raju Bista, sent a letter to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, urging her to facilitate central aid for North Bengal residents. He called for the disaster to be recognized as a ‘state disaster,’ suggesting that such a declaration would enable the Centre to provide comprehensive support.
It’s noteworthy that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also visited North Bengal on Monday afternoon. Before departing to assess the damage, she announced a one-time compensation of Rs 5,00,000 for each victim's family.
Additionally, she mentioned that a family member from each affected household would be offered a position as a home guard in the state police.
“While no amount of money can replace lost lives, the state government has a social obligation. Providing compensation and job opportunities is part of our responsibility to ensure that the victims' families can sustain themselves independently in the future,” she stated.
After several days of relentless rainfall, which resulted in at least 23 fatalities as of Monday morning, the weather improved in the hills today. This change allowed rescue operations to accelerate, with many stranded tourists also making their way down from the hills.
