Why Did Bengal CM Advance Unemployment Dole Payments?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 10 (NationPress) In a remarkable decision, West Bengal's Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, announced on Tuesday a significant change to the interim (vote on account) budget that was presented to the Assembly on February 5. The date for the initiation of payments under the “unemployment allowance” scheme has been advanced from August 15 to April.
During the initial budget speech on February 5, Chandrima Bhattacharya, the West Bengal Minister of State for Finance (independent charge), introduced a new initiative named 'Banglaar Yava Sathi', aimed at providing an unemployment allowance to young individuals aged between 21 and 40 who have completed their secondary education.
On that occasion, Bhattacharya revealed that participants in the scheme would receive a monthly allowance of Rs 1,500 and noted that the project was slated to commence on August 15, contingent upon the Trinamool Congress retaining power in the upcoming Assembly elections.
However, in a hastily arranged press conference on Tuesday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee declared that the start date for the payments under this scheme would be moved up to April this year, rather than August 15, as previously indicated in the interim budget.
She stated that this allowance would be granted for a duration of five years for each recipient, with a review process to determine whether to continue payments for those who remain unemployed after that period.
Additionally, the Chief Minister announced the organization of application camps throughout February across all 294 Assembly constituencies in the state for individuals interested in the scheme.
“A comprehensive advertisement will be published to inform the public about the camp dates for application submissions. Following the review of applications, payments under the scheme will commence from April 1,” said Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
