Kolkata, Aug 18 (NationPress) In a significant move ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has unveiled a vital initiative aimed at supporting migrant workers who are returning to the state. The newly introduced scheme, named 'Shramshree', received approval during a meeting held on Monday.
In light of distressing reports regarding the mistreatment of Bengali workers in various regions, the Chief Minister announced that assistance will be granted only post their return to Bengal.
Alongside monthly financial support, a one-time payment was also disclosed by the Chief Minister.
“This represents a rehabilitation allowance. Financial aid will be available for one year, until these individuals secure new employment. The Labor Department will oversee this initiative,” the Chief Minister informed reporters at the Nabanna state secretariat.
Many individuals have expressed concerns about being compelled to leave Bengal due to limited job opportunities.
“The state government is committed to aiding them until they find work in Bengal. The new initiative is titled 'Shramshree',” the Chief Minister elaborated.
This scheme was ratified during a meeting in the state capital.
“For any migrant worker wishing to return to Bengal from another state, the government will extend financial support. Initially, an amount of Rs. 5,000 will be provided upon their arrival in Bengal.
“Subsequently, a monthly sum of Rs. 5,000 will be disbursed for a year. Furthermore, these migrant workers will continue to receive additional state benefits, including health insurance. The entire process will be managed by the Labor Department,” the Chief Minister stated.
In addition to financial support, Mamata Banerjee announced that these workers would also receive job training. Currently, 78 lakh job cards have already been issued.
“Recently, over 2,730 families have been brought back, equating to approximately 10,000 individuals if we consider an average of 4-5 members per family,” the Chief Minister noted.
