Has Bengal's Student Credit Card Scheme Surpassed 1 Lakh Sanctions?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Nov 28 (NationPress) Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee revealed on Friday that the number of sanctioned cases under West Bengal’s student credit card scheme has officially surpassed the remarkable milestone of 1 lakh.
In a post on social media, the Chief Minister highlighted that this flagship initiative by the state government offers students educational loans up to Rs 10 lakh at a minimal interest rate, with the entire interest subsidy covered by the state.
“I am pleased to announce that the student credit card scheme has officially crossed the milestone of 100,000 sanctioned cases today. Under this significant scheme, students can access education loans of up to Rs 10 lakh at a very low interest rate. The state government fully funds the interest subvention,” the Chief Minister wrote in her social media update.
She emphasized that the scheme will continue to foster young talents in their pursuit of academic and professional aspirations.
“I wish all our students a bright and prosperous future,” the Chief Minister added.
The scheme was launched on June 30, 2021, shortly after Mamata Banerjee began her third term as Chief Minister following the assembly elections of that year.
It was a key promise in her election campaign, offering financial aid of up to Rs 10 lakh at a straightforward annual interest rate of 4% for students aiming for higher education in India and abroad, with the full interest subsidy funded by the state.
Despite its success, there have been ongoing challenges related to the scheme's execution, particularly disputes between the state government and banks. The state has frequently accused banks of being reluctant to approve and disburse loans, even though the government acts as the guarantor.
During quarterly meetings of the State Level Bankers’ Committee in West Bengal, finance department officials have consistently claimed that certain banks have requested collateral security despite the state government's guarantee.
